A Combined Simulation Approach to Evaluate Overtaking Behaviour on Two-Lane Two-Way Rural Roads

چکیده
A significant percentage of road fatalities and injuries occur in the nonmotorway rural network. One main causes accidents on these roads is represented by overtaking, as, its nature, it involves a risk head-on collision with oncoming traffic. The paper describes combined simulation approach (driving simulator traffic microsimulation) designed to examine influence different conditions passing manoeuvres two-lane two-way roads. focus was evaluation end manoeuvre because reflects collision. In addition, study aimed assess usefulness proposed ability proactively quickly diagnose safety problems consequently evaluate appropriate solutions. data collected an interactive driving sample 54 participants have been used adjust some input microsimulation software. specific situation consisting stationary heavy vehicle obstructing entire lane repeated both experiments. analyses focused time-to-collision (TTC), defined as remaining gap between at manoeuvre. results showed that type performed significantly influenced condition. Furthermore, two successive vehicles opposite lanes. Focusing manoeuvre, found how increase leads reduction TTC values. comparative analysis conducted recorded following those obtained using exclusively software supports methodology for conducting analyses, especially complex environments where drivers’ behaviour plays decisive role.

Overtaking Prohibition Safety Effects on Two Lane Rural Roads
This paper presents the results of a cost-effectiveness study concerning the effects of an overtaking prohibition on two lane rural roads. Overtaking prohibitions are being implemented in the Netherlands aiming to improve safety. Overtaking frequency on road sections with and without overtaking prohibition are measured by means of camera observations Overtaking frequencies were determined by co...

present study is an extension of earlier work carried out on two-lane two way roads in the two provinces of pakistan i.e. n-25, n-55 and n-5 regarding the measure of operating speed and development of operating speed prediction models. curved sections of two-lane rural highways are the main location of run-off road accidents. in addition to that the road alignment having combination of geometri...
متن کاملTwo Low-Cost Safety Concepts for Two-Way STOP-Controlled, Rural Intersections on High-Speed Two-Lane, Two-Way Roadways
The Federal Highway Administration (FHWA) Office of Safety has identified intersections as one of its safety focus areas. As part of the FHWA efforts to reduce intersection crashes and the related injuries and fatalities, two concepts have been identified: (1) rumble strips on outside shoulders and in a painted yellow median island on major road approaches and (2) channelizing separator islands...
متن کاملEstimation Model of Two-Lane Rural Roads Safety Index According to Characteristics of the Road and Drivers’ Behavior
Vehicle crashes are amongst the major causes of mortality and results in losses of lives and properties. A large number of the vehicle crashes occur on rural roads. Accidents become more noteworthy in two-lane roads due to going and coming traffic. Therefore, prediction of crashes and their causes are considerably important to reduce the number and severity of the accidents. The safety index is...
